The research activity of Javier Soto-Navarro was initially focused on the characterization, at seasonal and interannual time scales, of the exchange through the Strait of Gibraltar. He carried out studies about the relationship of the hydrological budget of the Mediterranean basin with the variability of the inflow through the strait, the thermohaline properties of the Mediterranean outflow and validation of the performance of ocean circulation models describing the strait dynamics. Afterwards, he participated in the development of the high frequency radar network operated by the Spanish ports authority. Currently he is working on the validation of climatic ocean circulation models for the Mediterranean Sea and the analysis of projections for the 214st century.
